April 2022
This month, Mercy For Animals released an eye-opening investigation revealing the suffering of chickens at an ALDI supplier. We backed regulations banning the production and sale of eggs from caged hens in Arizona. A large demonstration in India sent a message to companies that cruel cages for hens must be abolished. And our video team produced a compelling video to highlight Earth Month.
Exposing ALDI
United States
Mercy For Animals released a new undercover investigation documenting extreme animal suffering at a facility raising chickens for an ALDI supplier. ALDI is an international grocery chain that ranks in the lowest tier of the 2021 Mercy For Animals U.S. retailer report on welfare standards for chickens raised for meat.
We are calling on ALDI to ban the most horrendous animal suffering in its supply chain. Take action.
Training Chefs
Brazil
Our food policy program in Brazil, Alimentação Consciente Brasil, held four kitchen trainings with our partner city Niterói in the state of Rio de Janeiro. With the help of chef Barbara Carvalho, 60 people were trained in two days.
We also started implementing the program in Salvador, where we recently secured a commitment. All city school directors attended a talk we held in partnership with Humane Society International on sustainability, food systems, and plant-based nutrition.

Celebrating Earth Month
Global
To honor Earth Day, April 22, we published a new collaborative video with bestselling author Joanne Lee Molinaro, known as The Korean Vegan. The video has already garnered more than 230,000 views.
Gaining Momentum for Cage-Free Laws
United States
The Arizona Governor’s Regulatory Review Council unanimously approved regulations banning the production and sale of eggs from caged hens in the state. Mercy For Animals, along with other coalition members, mobilized supporters to submit public comments in favor of the regulations. The ratio of supportive to opposing comments was 17 to one.
A cage-free bill in Hawaii passed the House Finance Committee.
Launching the Farmer Toolkit
United States
We launched an online toolkit to support farmers looking to transition from raising animals. The project is a collaboration with Animal Outlook and Dairy Farm Transition.
The Farmer Toolkit brings together technical expertise, financial resources, and market insights and offers farmers a way to learn and explore their options. Industry and vegan media outlets reported on the toolkit.
Releasing a Public Health Report
United States
Mercy For Animals released a report that examines how industrial animal agriculture impacts the health and welfare of billions of people worldwide.
The comprehensive 30-page report details the most pressing threats animal agriculture poses to people, communities, and sustainability.
Demonstrating to Ban Cages
India
Mercy For Animals India and partner organizations held a demonstration calling for a ban on cruel cages for hens. Dozens of volunteers participated in the event, and 22 media outlets were present.
Organizing Communities
United States
The U.S. team hosted the first community planning session for our upcoming LEAFS fellowship program. Thirteen members of the food justice movement attended.
In Mexico, we tabled at the Ola Vegana Festival CDMX to engage with future supporters and volunteers.
Pushing a Cage-Free Message
Brazil
Mercy For Animals team members in Brazil participated in three important industry events to encourage companies to move forward with the transition to cage-free housing for hens.
