Monthly Impact Report

September 2022

Mercy For Animals celebrated and inspired at its 23rd anniversary gala. In Brazil, we secured multiple cage-free commitments while expanding plant-based seafood options at a local restaurant. In the United States, a recent investigation inspired celebrity-powered action for chickens.

Securing and Expanding Cage-Free Commitments

Brazil, Mexico, Global

After conversations with Mercy For Animals, Brazilian egg producer Planalto Ovos committed to keeping its operations 100 percent cage-free. In a new commitment, Supermercados Pague Menos, one of the 25 largest grocery retailers in Brazil, has pledged to no longer sell eggs from caged hens by 2028.

In Mexico, restaurants Choux Choux Café, Le P’tit Shoux, and Green Me have released policies pledging to go cage-free. Additionally, these companies are committed to having plant-based options always available to promote responsible consumption in their operations.

Spanish hotel chain RIU Hotels & Resorts has committed to going 100 percent cage-free by 2025 not only in Mexico but throughout its operations—more than 100 hotels in 20 countries.

On a global stage, Toridoll, which operates food brands in 30 countries and regions, has committed to sourcing only cage-free eggs for all its operations outside Japan by 2030. In Japan, Toridoll promises that 3 percent of the eggs its brands use will be cage-free by 2023 and plans to increase the amount each year. This commitment was secured by Open Wing Alliance with support from Mercy For Animals.

Expanding Vegan Seafood Options in Brazil

Brazil

Camarão & Cia, a restaurant chain specializing in seafood, has added a vegan menu option at its over 40 locations. Customers can now enjoy plant-based moqueca de banana da terra, a traditional Brazilian dish usually made with fish.

Inspiring Celebrity Action for Chickens

United States

Twenty-four compassionate cast members from the iconic TV show Baywatch, including Alexandra Paul and David Hasselhoff, have penned an open letter urging ALDI to reduce suffering for chickens. They were inspired to take action by a recent Mercy For Animals hidden-camera investigation of a contract farm that raises chickens for an ALDI supplier. Footage reveals tens of thousands of chickens inside filthy, overcrowded sheds, with countless suffering from serious injuries and illnesses.

Eliminating Gestation Crates

Canada

Panago Pizza has committed to sourcing pork only from farms that have banned gestation crates by 2026. Used to confine pregnant pigs, these crates are so restrictive the animals can’t even turn around.

Growing a Compassionate Movement

United States

On September 16, Mercy For Animals held its 23rd anniversary gala at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, featuring delicious plant-based food and a vibrant after-party under the stars. Celebrity supporters Richa Moorjani, Skylar Stecker, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Stephanie Corneliussen, Shawn Hook, and others joined us. Our inspiring community raised over $1.4 million to support Mercy For Animals’ vital work!

Advancing Knowledge About Fish and Animal-Free Products

United States

Mercy For Animals researchers and their collaborators recently published two papers in research journals. One provides evidence that fish are individuals who vary in their capabilities, experiences, and preferences. Given these differences, efforts to improve welfare for fish in captivity should consider their individuality. In the other paper, researchers offer insight into consumer perceptions of dairy products made with technology that does not involve animals.
