April 2023
In April, Mercy For Animals helped advance global cage-free commitments. We also released a documentary revealing the suffering of fish in industrial aquaculture, inspired chefs and influencers to sign an open letter targeting factory farm emissions, and influenced governmental oversight of pig farms in Jharkhand, India.
Advancing Corporate Cage-Free Commitments
Global
After dialogue with Mercy For Animals and the publication of the International Cage-Free Equity Index, multinational supermarket chain Dia Group expanded its commitment to selling only cage-free eggs. The company plans to complete this transition in Spain and Brazil by the end of 2025 and in Portugal and Argentina by the end of 2028.
An Open Wing Alliance (OWA) campaign helped encourage Kellogg’s to publish a global policy to source only cage-free egg ingredients by the end of 2025. Its previous policy excluded Russia and Egypt. Additionally, after requests from OWA, PepsiCo Group released a progress report showing that the company is on track to eliminate all cage eggs from its products worldwide by the end of 2025.
Sending a Message to the EPA
United States
In honor of Earth Day, over 70 acclaimed chefs and influencers from around the world have signed an open letter by Mercy For Animals and other coalition members calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to enforce stricter emission standards at factory farms. Join us in working toward a better tomorrow by adding your name to the letter.
Revealing the Suffering of Fish
Global
Mercy For Animals has released a new documentary revealing the scale of modern fish farming—also known as industrial aquaculture. Fish are some of the most abused animals on the planet, yet they receive no legal protection and less advocacy than other farmed animals. Our new film highlights facts and expert testimonials to show why a fish’s suffering is every bit as important as the suffering of land animals.
Increasing Oversight for Pigs
India
After appeals from Mercy For Animals India Foundation, the state of Jharkhand’s government instructed its veterinary officers to ensure that the use of gestation and farrowing crates complies with animal welfare laws. Join us in urging India’s Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and use of gestation and farrowing crates for pigs across India in compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
