February 2023
In February, Mercy For Animals influenced a number of important commitments to reducing the worst suffering for chickens and pigs.
Reducing Chicken Suffering
Global and Brazil
LSG Group has committed to sourcing 100 percent cage-free eggs and egg products for its global operations by 2025. As the world’s second-largest airline caterer, LSG serves almost all major airlines in more than 40 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, North America, Oceania, and South America. This commitment comes after dialogue with the Mercy For Animals corporate engagement team, who will work with the company to achieve its goal by 2025.Patties, a burger chain with three locations in the city of São Paulo, has published a commitment to using only cage-free eggs in its recipes. The popular burger chain has a strong social media presence, with over 255,000 followers.
Holding Pig Farmers Accountable
India
After appeals from Mercy For Animals India Foundation, the state of Telangana’s director of animal husbandry issued a letter to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of each district. The letter instructs each district office to have its field officers monitor the use of gestation and farrowing crates in the state’s pig farms. The farms must comply with Section 11(1)(e) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which requires any cage used to confine animals to provide a “reasonable opportunity for movement.”Tracking Progress for Chickens
United States
After discussions with Mercy For Animals, several companies have published a road map to meeting their Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) goals or have begun reporting progress. These include Jack in the Box, Blue Apron, Sweet Green, Sprouts, and PCC Community Markets. The BCC is the leading set of standards to drive the industry toward higher welfare for chickens raised for meat.Building a Movement
