Monthly Impact Report

June 2023

In June, Mercy For Animals collaborated with popular restaurateurs, attended one of Mexico’s largest music festivals, and secured new updates from companies on progress toward their animal welfare goals.

Training Chefs and Restaurant Executives

Mexico

Mercy For Animals’ EligeVeg program in Mexico held its first plant-based culinary workshop. Chefs and executives from top restaurants learned about replacing eggs in various dishes and got to try—and be impressed by—vegan eggs.

Ensuring Companies Implement Prior Commitments

Brazil, Global, United States

After requests from Mercy For Animals, four companies started reporting progress on their chicken welfare commitments: Unilever, Martha & Marley Spoon, Mellow Mushroom, and Campfire Treats.

Campfire Treats, a producer of dog treats, stated that all chickens in its supply chain were no longer killed with the cruelest slaughter methods and that the company aimed to transition to higher-welfare breeds of chicken by the end of the year.

Unilever also published progress on its global commitment to sourcing eggs only from hens raised without cages. The company states it is about 72% of the way toward this goal.

And Applegate, a consumer-packaged-goods company that sells meat products, pledged that by the end of 2023 it would publish a roadmap indicating how it will fulfill its animal welfare commitment.

In Brazil, Bifum publicly announced that it had removed eggs from its menu in 2022.

Raising Awareness at a Music Festival

Mexico

Corona Capital Guadalajara is one of the largest music festivals in Mexico. Our staff and volunteers were invited to table at the event, where we gathered signatures for our Regulación a Hueva campaign. This initiative urges government agencies to regulate use of the term “cage-free.” Festival attendees also enjoyed being stamped with our hen tattoos.

Highlighting Acclaimed Restaurateur Ravi DeRossi

United States

Ravi DeRossi owns 12 popular plant-based bars, restaurants, and bakeries in the East Village of Manhattan. We collaborated with this food innovator on a new video highlighting the amazing food he serves to largely non-vegan customers.

Using Star Power for Cows

Brazil

Brazilian actor Márcio Garcia joined our campaign that draws attention to the horrible realities of the dairy industry. Across three social media reels, Garcia calls out the cruel separation of mother cows and calves and how odd it is for humans to consume milk from other species. This important message was delivered to his more than eight million followers.

Gaining Media Attention

Brazil

Our EscolhaVeg team in Brazil recently conducted research on the increased interest in plant-based foods and in June garnered coverage about this work in 18 articles, including one in the country’s most widely read newspaper, O Globo.

Condemning World Milk Day

India

On World Milk Day, our team in India visited a member of the legislative assembly. We shared information on how dairy farms in her jurisdiction were causing animal suffering and called on her to take action.

Building a Movement

Brazil, United States, Mexico

We believe that the world’s mightiest institutions will heed the call to reform when it comes from powerful and interconnected communities. That’s why our supporters are so important.
